Bringing to the table over a century’s worth of collective experience as singers, songwriters, recording artists, producers and performers; “LEKTRIC MULLET” has quickly become one of the most popular bands in the Florida Panhandle. In 2005, charter member, Bill Dossey was playing an acoustic solo gig at Paddy O’leary’s on Pensacola Beach when he was approached by a musical acquaintance, David Glencoe, who offered his services on guitar and vocals. Soon thereafter “DOSSEY AND GLENCOE” was formed. Then in 2006 Dossey was introduced to Ricky Lee Phelps through some mutual friends and through a series of circumstances Ricky Lee joined the dynamic duo, bass guitar in hand and adding a third vocal. Thus “DOSSEY, GLENCOE AND PHELPS” became the new moniker.
The trio spent a year growing their following as well as their repertoire. As the music matured they realized they had reached an impasse. They either had to simplify their musical approach to remain a trio or add a drummer to give the music they were making the finishing touch. They knew that finding the right drummer could be a daunting task and one that they did not relish. As fate would have it, Ricky Lee had been playing occasionally with a few other bands on the side. Though he played with several different local drummers at these gigs, one fellow in particular caught his attention. So one night the trio was holding a serious band meeting to make the decision as to their future. Ricky Lee mentioned that he knew a drummer who he felt could fit the bill to move the band forward. So at the next rehearsal Randy “Ringo” Whitaker arrived and “Bam” the band was complete.
They realized at this point that they needed a group name for the band. So one night during a break in rehearsal they were sitting outside looking out at the Santa Rosa Sound, wracking their brains for just the right name for the group, when they spied a floating light hovering just above the surface of the water. One of the guys exclaimed, “What is that?” and another offhandedly said, “Why, that’s an electric mullet.” The whole band knew immediately that they had their new band name. So with a bit of change in spelling for flair they became known from that moment on as “LEKTRIC MULLET”.
They found common ground in musical influences from the late 60’s, early 70’s rock groups, not the least of which were “The Beatles”. They formed their sound by performing remakes of many of the ultra classic rock songs from that era, carefully handpicking songs that they knew all ages would remember but were rarely heard performed by a live band. The songs spotlight the group’s vocal prowess as they meander through their sets of honey dripped harmony vocals, which is the centerpiece of their sound. In addition to their cover tunes they also play several originals some of which were made famous by Ricky Lee’s former band, “The Kentucky HeadHunters”.
“LEKTRIC MULLET” is currently working on writing new tunes for their first CD project, which promises to show yet another facet of the vast amount of experience brought together as a united front.
